UFC 124 Staff Predictions

UFC 124: St. Pierre vs. Koscheck 2
Saturday, December 11th at 7 p.m on PPV
Bell Center in Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Main Card:
Georges St. Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck (Welterweight Title Bout)
Mike Bohn: In my opinion this fight will be much more competitive that most believe. Koscheck is a great fighter and he will come with a good game plan and he could take a round, maybe two from Georges. Unfortunately I don’t see him winning this fight but I also don’t see him getting ran through or put away either. Georges St. Pierre via Unanimous Decision

Erik Jackson:
GSP is the safe bet in this one. He seems very focused but the same could be said for Josh Koscheck. Look for this one to be more competitive then the first time around as GSP is gunning for the finish. Georges St.Pierre via Submission R3

Travis Crowe:
There’s nothing to say about this fight. Josh is not only a douche bag who is in my tops for most hated fighters but also has no skills that are better than GSP’s. Georges is going to dominate him in every way possible, and I really hope we see him KO Koscheck. Georges St. Pierre via TKO R3

Jon Gerow:
And still!! Georges St. Pierre via TKO R1

Paul Curtis:
I wouldn't be surprised if Josh turned this into a wrestling battle and made it a close fight. But I think if GSP can execute a flawless game plan as he has in all his recent fights, by using his stand-up, wrestling and BJJ all very effectively he should prevail as champion once again. Koscheck says he has better stand up, which I disagree with. He may have more power, but I believe GSP is more technical and diverse with his striking. I see GSP doing exactly what GSP does, taking his opponents will where ever the fight goes. This will be the best GSP we've ever seen. Georges St. Pierre via Submission R4

Patrick Weafer:
GSP is better than Kos at everything, save for perhaps raw punching power. I expect GSP to dominate this fight both on the feet and on the ground and unless Koscheck clips him with a perfect punch St. Pierre should finish him before the championship rounds. Georges St. Pierre via TKO R3

Stefan Struve vs. Sean McCorkle (Heavyweight Bout)
Mike Bohn:
Battle of two giant. While McCorkle’s trash talk has been comical, I don’t see him being able to get past the improving Struve. Stefan has been training striking with some of the best in the world in Holland and I expect him to look sharp and put Sean away early. But as always, he might just have to get beat up a little bit first. Stefan Struve via TKO R1

Erik Jackson:

As much as I like Stefan Struve, the “Curtain Jerker” is quickly becoming one of my favourites. His interviews continue to make me laugh and I really hope he can continue on his winning ways. Sean McCorkle via TKO R2

Travis Crowe:
I predict Struve to win this fight with a devastating TKO, but not before he’s bleeding everywhere and thrown his game plan out the window just swinging viciously. Stefan Struve via TKO R2

Jon Gerow:
Look for Struve to sprawl and brawl in this one as it is clear he has the advantage in the stand-up. McCorkle`s only chance to win this fight is on the ground, but I see him having a tough time getting it there. Moreover if McCorkle gets it to the ground he will have an even tougher time submitting Struve, who has proven his BJJ time and time again. Stefan Struve via KO R2

Paul Curtis:
117 homie!!! Stefan Struve is the real deal and he's still so young! Look for him to keep the fight standing and end McCorkles undefeated streak viciously. Stefan Struve via KO R1

Patrick Weafer:
Struve is no Mark Hunt and this is a huge step up in competition for the UG celebrity. McCorkle may be undefeated but this is only his second fight out of the regional circuit. We haven’t seen Sean’s striking yet in the big leagues and although it may impress Struve has power and the BJJ chops to control the fight on the ground. This could be a striking match or a ground battle. Stefan Struve via TKO R2.

Thiago Alves vs. John Howard (Welterweight Bout)
Mike Bohn:
Alves has his back against the wall and is going to come in highly motivated. He will make an example of John Howard. Thiago Alves via TKO R2

Erik Jackson:

I expect fireworks in this one. Both fighters like to stand and bang and I don’t think Saturday night should be any different. John Howard via TKO R2

Travis Crowe:
This should be an explosive fight between two guys known for KTFO. I would say this is a step up in fighter quality for Doomsday and should present him with a favorable match up. That being said Alves is coming off of a very disappointing loss in the rematch with Jon Fitch and I think that his motivation to win will out-weigh any opportunity Doomsday has. In the end I think Alves will have his hand raised. Thiago Alves via TKO R2

Jon Gerow:
My pick for FOTN as both fighters have made it clear we are in store for an explosive Muay Thai match. I expect Alves to pick Howard apart using his deadly leg kicks and powerful strikes. Alves, with his new diet and extreme power I expect him to finish Howard in the 3rd round. Thiago Alves via TKO R3

Paul Curtis:
For some reason I see Howard pulling an upset on Thiago. It should be a stand up with battle with some major bombs being thrown. I see Howard landing a flush hook and knocking Alves down and finishing him. John Howard via TKO R2.

Patrick Weafer:
This will be a war, but a solid fight for Alves as he is attempting to come back from a two-fight losing streak. John Howard has vicious KO power but Alves should have the technical prowess to overwhelm him leading to a TKO finish. Thiago Alves via TKO R2

Jim Miller vs. Charles Oliveira (Lightweight Bout)
Mike Bohn:
Easily my most anticipated fight on this card. I have no doubts Charles has potential to be a champion one day but at 20 years of age I think this fight is too much too soon for him. As much as I would like to see “Do Bronx” pull off a victory, Jim Miller is not Darren Elkins or Efrain Escudero. With his only career losses coming to Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard, I doubt Miller loses this fight. Jim Miller via Unanimous Decision

Erik Jackson:
I don’t quite understand why Jim Miller is the underdog in this fight. He’s 7 and 1 in the UFC and has only lost to Gray Maynard. That being said, Charles has greatly impressed and I really hope he can keep it going. Charles Oliveira via Unanimous Decision

Travis Crowe:
In his first two fights in the UFC, Oliveira has shown his potential. With two unreal submissions and plenty others in his career he clearly has a bright future. Unfortunately I think that his perfect record will get its first loss come Saturday. His opponent Jim Miller is a respected fighter with great wrestling and BJJ, and is on the slow track to getting a title shot. I think that Millers motivation will be evident, as he knows that a win against up and comer Oliveira will be big. I expect a grueling 3 rounds. Jim Miller via Unanimous Decision

Jon Gerow:
Don’t get me wrong, Charles Oliveira looked great in his first 2 UFC fights, but Jim Miller is no Efrain. Jim Miller should dominate this one. Jim Miller via Unanimous Decision

Paul Curtis:
FOTN candidate. I'm a pretty big fan of Oliveira and I think hes got a bright future. I think he'll out strike Miller and land the takedowns when necessary. Charles Oliveira via Unanimous Decision.

Patrick Weafer:
A big step up in competition for do Brox as Miller has a 7-1 record in the UFC with his only loss coming to LW top contender Gray Maynard and his only other career loss was against champion Frankie Edgar. Charles Oliveira has looked extremely impressive in his 2 fights, and I can’t wait to see what he brings to the table in this one, but the safe bet is Jim Miller via Unanimous Decision.

Joe Stevenson vs. Mac Danzig (Lightweight Bout)
Mike Bohn:
Danzig has lost 4 of his last 5 so his status in the UFC is likely on the line here, the same could probably be said for Stevenson who is 2-3 in his last 5. Mac has struggled against good wrestlers for a majority of his career and I expect this fight to be no different. Joe Stevenson via Unanimous Decision

Erik Jackson:
This is a must win for both fighters. Since winning the Ultimate Fighter, Mac Danzig has not impressed. This should be a back and forth fight in which Joe will come out on top. Joe Daddy via Unanimous Decision

Travis Crowe:
Not much to say about this fight. Stevenson is a bigger homie than UFC 115 homie Danzig.
Joe Stevenson via Submission (RNC) R1

Jon Gerow:
Mac knows this is do or die, unfortunately I can’t see him winning come Saturday night. I feel his skills don’t match up well against a superior grappler in Stevenson.  Joe Stevenson via Unanimous Decision

Paul Curtis:
Stevenson will catch Danzig with a guillotine choke in the first round. Joe Stevenson via Submission R1

Patrick Weafer:
Joe has only lost to the elite in the LW division and Danzig is barely hanging on in the UFC – and will likely be cut after this loss. Joe Stevenson via Unanimous Decision.
