UFC Fight Night 22 Staff Predictions

UFC Fight Night 22
Wednesday, September 15th at 5 p.m on Spike TV
Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas, USA

Main Card:
Nate Marquardt vs. Rousimar Palhares (Middleweight Bout)

Mike Bohn:
Personally I think Nate Marquardt is one of the most over rated fighters in the middleweight division. He has one relevant win in the past 5 years, coming over Damian Maia, the rest come over fighters who no longer compete in the division or no longer compete in the UFC. Palhares will make his second attempt at facing a highly ranked middleweight; his first attempt he came up short in a decision loss to Dan Henderson. I see this fight going similar to Nate’s fight against Dean Lister, with Marquardt controlling the pace of the stand up while avoiding the guard and ground game of Palhares. Rousimar can certainly finish this fight is he gets a hold of a limb but I find it unlikely as Marquardt has not been finished by submission since 2003. Nate will fight a conservative fight as he knows a loss would crush his dreams of ever earning another top contender fight in the middleweight division. Nate Marquardt via Unanimous Decision

Erik Jackson:
Rousimar is coming off a big win while Nate is trying to come back from a devastating loss to Chael Sonnen. Look for Nate to come out angry and mix it up as he gets a big win to get back into the title picture. Nate Marquardt via TKO R1

Travis Crowe:
Nate is going to dominate Palhares will! Whether it is a quick KO (Maia style) or some vicious ground and pound, look for Palhares to lose. Nate Marquardt via TKO R2

Jon Gerow:
I still believe Nate is the number 2 MW in the UFC, even after suffering the disappointing loss to Sonnen. Nate has already demolished a more decorated BJJ fighter in Damien Maia at UFC 102 and I expect him to do the same to Palhares on Wednesday night. Nate will be the next MW champion of the UFC. Nuff Said. Nate “The Great” Marquardt via TKO R3

Paul Curtis:
After coming off an embarrassing loss to Chael Sonnen look for Nate to bounce back. Palhares posses an interesting threat with his top notch BJJ, but I doubt it will be an easy time getting the fight to the mat. Look for this fight to stay standing and Marquardt to win the exchanges. Nate Marquardt via Unanimous decision.

Patrick Weafer:
In 40 fights Nate Marquardt has only been submitted twice, most recently by Ricardo Almeida in November of 2003. Nate has been submission-free for almost 7 years, which doesn’t bode well for Paul Harris – although Rousimar’s submission ability’s are excellent and he is coming off back-to-back vicious heel hook victories. Palhares may be looking to take home Nate’s leg in this one, but I see Marquardt keeping it standing and delivering. Nate Marquardt via TKO R2

Efrain Escudero vs. Charles Oliveira (Lightweight Bout)

Mike Bohn:
While Efrain Escudero’s main strength is his wrestling, it may be in his best interest to keep this fight as far away from the ground as possible. Charles Oliveira’s UFC debut only lasted 41 seconds, which is all we needed to see his skills on the ground.  Now he takes on Escudero on short notice and looks to make another statement by beating the Ultimate Fighter winner. Efrain certainly has the power to end the fight with a knockout standing, but I fully anticipate this fight to hit the ground and when it does, Efrain will be tapping. Charles Oliveira via Submission R2

Erik Jackson:
Efrain's weight cut issues gave me some concern. Look for Charles to remain undefeated as he works for the finish. Charles Oliveira via Submission (RNC) R3

Travis Crowe:

Once again this will be a technical battle, look for Efrain to dominate this fight. Efrain Escudero via Submission (armbar) R2

Jon Gerow:
Brazilians are knows for iron chins so I don’t expect Efrain to finish this fight, Although Efrain did lose to top prospect Evan Dunham and submitted BJJ specialist Junie Browning, despite this I expect Efrain to neutralize the Brazilian with his wrestling to grind out a decision victory. Efrain Escudero via Unanimous Decision

Paul Curtis:
For some reason I could see a potential upset in this fight. Oliveira is undefeated with almost all of his victories not going to decision. However Efrain is a big step up in competition, and i think Efrain's UFC experience will be the ultimate decider in this fight. Efrain Escudero via TKO R2

Patrick Weafer:
Hyped rising prospect vs. former prospect who hasn’t quite lived up to his TUF hype. Efrain Escudero coming in at 159 isn’t a good sign either, as it makes one think that he is either injured or didn’t take his training as seriously as he should have for do Bronx. Charles may be over hyped, only time will tell, but I still think he takes this fight with another stunning technical display of jiu-jitsu.  Charles Oliveira via Submission R2

Jim Miller vs. Gleison Tibau (Lightweight Bout)

Mike Bohn:
Jim Miller is undoubtedly one of the very best lightweights in the UFC, his only career losses are to the two men who will next face off for the title in Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard. This should be a competitive fight but Tibau has failed against wrestle-boxers such as Tyson Griffin and Joe Stevenson in the past. Look for Miller take this fight to the mat early and often to earn himself his 7th UFC victory. Jim Miller via Unanimous Decision

Erik Jackson:
Should be a good fight, i think jim should be able to bang out a decision. Jim Miller via Unanimous Decision

Travis Crowe:
Interesting fight! simply put I expect this to be a very technical battle ending with Jim's hand raised. Jim Miller via submission (RNC) R2

Jon Gerow:
Miler is a very well rounded game fighter that sets a fast pase ala Frankie Edgar. Unfortunately for Jim, I see Gleison outmuscling Jim for the majority of this fight and will look to explode early. I expect this one to be a close war. Gleison Tibau via Split Decision

Paul Curtis:
Miller has put together a decent win streak winning 4 in a row. But I think his submission game won't be as big of a threat against a BJJ black belt in Gleison Tibau as it has been against previous opponents. I see Tibau controlling the fight wherever it goes. Gleison Tibau via Unanimous decision

Patrick Weafer:
Anyone as big as Gleison Tibau who cuts to 155 has otherworldly talents that cannot be ignored. Miller has high-level jiu-jistu, but it won’t be enough to deal with Tibau’s stifling top control and superior BJJ. Gleison Tibau via Unanimous Decision

Cole Miller vs. Ross Pearson (Lightweight Bout)

Mike Bohn:
Ross has looked very impressive in his fights since winning the Ultimate Fighter but has yet to face a fighter with the jiu-jitsu credentials of Cole Miller. Ross has the better stand up but could have trouble getting inside the long reach of Miller. I believe Ross will be able to avoid the ground game long enough to land some heavy shots on the feet and eventually stopping Miller. Ross Pearson via (T)KO R2

Erik Jackson:
Ross will show why he's the real deal. Ross Pearson via TKO R2

Travis Crowe:
Coming off an impressive win over Dennis Siver, look for the Real Deal to continue his climb to the upper tier of lightweights. A win over Cole Miller will be impressive. Look for Miller to get a submission, perhaps Junie style. Ross Pearson via Unanimous Decision

Jon Gerow:
There is just something about Cole Miller that I don’t like, maybe it’s because he finished Junie’s UFC career. If this were a tattoo contest Ross would blow Cole out of the park if, you haven’t seen Cole Miller’s ATT tattoo on his bicep look it up and you will know what I’m talking about. Either way I see the REAL DEAL impressing once again this time with a TKO victory. Ross Pearson via TKO R1

Paul Curtis:
Ross Pearson is the real deal. Nuff said. Ross Pearson via Unanimous decision

Patrick Weafer:
Ross Pearson’s striking has looked impressive lately, particularly in his UD victory over Denis Siver. That being said, I believe Cole Miller may have the jiu-jitsu chops to take this one. Cole Miller via Submission R3
